Resmed has acquired VirtuOx, an independent diagnostic testing facility (IDTF) for sleep, respiratory, and cardiac conditions. Financial terms were not disclosed.

VirtuOx’s at-home diagnostic services allow Resmed to better support patients earlier in their journey. It will also help healthcare providers and homecare companies deliver care in a simpler, more connected way.

The company’s virtual testing platform can reduce barriers to diagnosis with fast, flexible, and affordable options. For people with suspected obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), the digital-first experience can make the difference between following through on testing and treatment or falling out of the care pathway.

Resmed will be able to partner with healthcare providers to streamline the diagnostic process and mitigate bottlenecks. The company will also be able to better collaborate with home medical equipment providers to support patients to begin treatment.

The acquisition supports the growing demand for home-based care, powered by increased awareness, convenience, and digital innovation. It also creates opportunities to expand into insomnia and deepen Resmed’s relationships with physicians, sleep labs, and home medical equipment providers.

“This is about creating a simpler, more connected pathway to care,” said Justin Leong, chief product officer at Resmed. “By integrating VirtuOx’s diagnostic capabilities into our ecosystem, we can help accelerate the time between evaluation and treatment, reduce drop-off, and help more people access the life-changing benefits of therapy for sleep apnea and related conditions.”

VirtuOx will operate as a fully owned Resmed subsidiary and continue to serve under its existing brand in the near future. The company’s leadership team will stay in place.

“VirtuOx and Resmed are aligned in our focus to simplify healthcare and expand access,” said Steve Lica, CEO of VirtuOx. “Joining Resmed gives us the opportunity to scale our impact, reach and help more patients, and keep innovating on behalf of the providers and health systems we serve.”

Last month, Resmed launched its NightOwl home sleep apnea test (HSAT) in the U.S. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-cleared HSAT offers a simplified, accurate, and efficient way to diagnose obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) from the home.
