Alcon has launched Clareon TruPlus, its new enhanced design monofocal and toric intraocular lens (IOL) in the U.S. The launch was announced at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) annual meeting.

The company said TruPlus provides surgeons an enhanced design IOL to enable increased depth of focus without compromising the high-quality distance vision expected from a monofocal IOL. The company also said TruPlus possesses differentiating features over Clareon Monofocal and the leading competitior IOL.

It shows a 3.5 letter improvement in simulated visual acuity at -1.5 diopters (66 cm) compared to Clareon Monofocal. TruPlus provides higher distance image quality than Tecnis Eyhance for a range of pupil sizes and lighting conditions, and exceeds the ISO upper requirement for distance image quality.

The IOL also shows a lower glare and halo profile than Tecnis Eyhance, Alcon said. It leverages proprietary Opti-Balance tech in the lens center to slightly extend the depth of focus. The design boosts light energy for the increased depth of focus while keeping “exceptional” image quality and a wide refractive landing zone.

“Cataract surgeons naturally want to offer patients a little more—without trade-offs,” said Terry Kim, MD, chief medical officer at Alcon. “Surgeons told us they were looking for an enhanced design monofocal that did not sacrifice distance vision quality. TruPlus was developed to address that need, while maintaining the exceptional stability and clarity that define the proven Clareon platform.”

Last month, the company announced that over 175 million of its IOLs have been implanted worldwide.
