Alcon has launched its Unity vitreoretinal cataract system (VCS) and cataract system (CS), which feature novel technologies to improve vitreoretinal and cataract surgeries. These are the first to become available in the company’s Unity line of next-gen surgical equipment.

The Unity VCS/CS platform comes in two configurations: VCS is the combined console and CS is a standalone system. Both systems feature Unity Intelligent Fluidics, a pressure and flow tech with real-time sensing. The technology maintains a consistent intraocular pressure level to support comfort and allow higher average vacuum while removing the lens.

Unity 27 Gauge instruments leverage the company’s Dynamic Stiffener technology to exceed limitations of traditional 27-gauge tools, the company claims. The instruments offer the stiffness of a 25-gauge system or better in a smaller gauge.

Unity Tetraspot is a multi-spot illumination probe that cuts laser application duration by up to three times. This way, surgeons can apply one, two, or four simultaneous laser spots for better versatility.

Unity Illuminations minimizes blue light exposure and features customizable light profiles to better visualize tissue, which Alcon said provides up to 10,000 hours of reliability.

Other enhancements include Intelligent Sentry, a tool that maintains anterior chamber stability, and Active Sentry, a function the company said cuts post-occlusion surge volumes by 44%. Thermal Sentry is a phacoemulsification handpiece with a thermal sensor that leverages an algorithm developed by Alcon to approximate incision temperature and regulate ultrasound power.

Unity VCS holds a CE mark and regulatory nods in Australia, Japan, and the U.S.

“Alcon has a long legacy of advancing phaco and vitreoretinal technology for surgical ophthalmology. With UNITY VCS/CS, we are introducing more than a dozen innovations designed to transform surgical outcomes while delivering significant efficiencies for surgery centers across the globe,” said David Endicott, CEO of Alcon. “This tremendous accomplishment could not have been achieved without those who participated in the development process, including the surgeons who have been evaluating the machines in their practices over the last year. We are excited to start shipping inventory next month so more practices can experience this extraordinary innovation.”

Earlier this month, the company introduced its Clareon PanOptix Pro intraocular lens for cataract patients in the U.S.
